X Aranjuez Marathon: A great basketball party

Spaintournaments|   July 8, 2009

The X Miguel Alcázar Memorial was a great success. This Basketball Marathon had more than 50 teams playing on 4 courts, plus one more court for the “rookies” (kids under 12). It all started last friday with men, women, young men, young women and kids. And it lasted until late on Saturday night without a pause.

Ballin at night

There were four games at a time, starting each hour. About 500 people in the gym and the surrounding courts, plus fans, relatives and friends of the players. And, of course, high-level basketball, including a good bunch of pro players from the Spanish LEB categories (Gold, Silver and Bronze), featuring the ACB player Nacho Martín as well.

From Friday evening until Saturday afternoon it was time for the Round Robin Phase. The teams were divided in groups and fought hard to advance to the final rounds. At 5 pm the 3-point shootout took place. Felipe Arroyo won in the men category and Susana Bacete made it for the women.

Afterwards, it was time for the win-or-go games. The quarter final round featured a thriller with the B-Squad facing the future champions, the team named Leclerc. Some members of the B-Squad have already been featured on Ballers Network, and they are a very well known streetball team in Spain, but the rivals also included top level players and the battle was hard until the end.

The final

The other quarter final games and the semifinals were as exciting as that game. The final game was played by Leclerc vs. Tien21 with pro players in both sides like Víctor Chuán, Jan Martin -who was later proclaimed MVP-, Josep Mestres, Adrián García in the former, and Roberto de la Mata and Carlos Arjonilla in the latter.

The final score was 71-69 after a lot of missed free throws and the chance for the runner ups to win the game with the last shot… but the ball failed to fall through the net.
