Courtney Lee: “Superman Hasn’t Dunked on Me”

BallersNetwork.com - this is where players live. Come to the Ballers page for all the info you need on the players and the personalities from around the world who make up the Network. Find out who they are, where they run and how they play.

I lived in a neighborhood called Mayfield in Indianapolis. There were outside courts there where I played a lot. I had older brothers, so I always played with them and watched them. It’s not too different from a lot of NBA stories - I was smaller than them, so playing on the same court made me tougher.

Since I’ve been in the NBA, I’ve gone back to Western Kentucky and played with kids at the school. I’ve done it a couple of times - especially in the summer. I’m always getting buckets on those guys! Also, going back home playing with everybody I grew up with is great. It was good to get back and see a lot of people. It’s always a good embrace. For the most part, a lot of these guys are happy to see one of their own succeed. And of course, they like getting a chance to go at me on the court.

This locker room is a lot more different, a lot more calm than it was at Western Kentucky. When coach is talking, everybody is serious with him. You’ve got people doing their own things, their own rituals before the game to get ready. Some of them are laughing, some of them are joking, some of them are listening to music, some of them are dancing. It’s a lot different.

Growing up, man I watched the Pacers and the Bulls a lot. They had one of the biggest rivalries in the game, and in playoff history. So that’s what I grew up watching.

I gotta say my greatest “moment” playing ball was this past Tournament. First, making it to the Tournament at that, and then the Drake game when Ty [Rogers] hit that three and we advanced to the Round of 32.

I’d say that there are also some great moments playing in the NBA too. When anybody makes a play, I get hyped for them, but Superman dunking on boys… when he dunks on somebody’s head, ooh boy! He hasn’t gotten me yet though. Haha, yet…
