Tennessee’s Tyler Smith helped the Vols to a 31-5 record last season in which they reached the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament. The SEC preseason Player of the Year is the Vols’ top returning scorer (13.6), led the team in rebounds (6.7) and assists (3.4).

Name: Tyler Smith

Age: 22

Hometown: Pulaski, Tennessee

Height: 6-7

Weight: 215

Shoe size: 14

Position: Forward

My Home Court: Back at home at this little park called North End Park

Playing Experience: I started playing when I was 6 or 7 and played on Saturday league games at my local high school. For AAU, I played for Tennessee Elite and then when I moved to Texas I played for the Fort Worth Stars for a little bit. Then coming back, I played for Southeast Elite and adidas Pump N’ Run Elite.

Current Team: University of Tennessee

Favorite Sneakers: Jordans of course. Man, I have too many to count. I try to collect them. Every pair of retros that come out I cop. I got at least 50 pairs. My favorites all-time are the white/black 11s.

Favorite Player: MJ, but I’m going with LeBron. I went to his camp this summer. Very good experience against the top college prospects.

Favorite Team: Chicago Bulls, of course

Go-to-Move: Fadeaway with my back to the basket. It’s hard to block but at the same time I get enough just to get it in.

I play: Because it’s something I love to do, It’s fun but it’s a lot of hard work. To see guys work hard at something they love is amazing. That’s just something I love to do. Some people like to play music, write music, whatever – I just love to play for the love of the game. I want my son to have the life that I didn’t have.

Coming up I admired: I tried to do it after LeBron. I like the way he takes over when he needs to. Just watching how he tries to take over the game and make his teammates better. When it comes crunch time, he wants the ball in his hands.

My basketball moment: Last year when we were cutting down the nets at the end of the season in Knoxville. It was the first time in 41 years.
